The PLD Innovation Awards winners

The PLD Innovation Awards winners were revealed at the PLD Innovation Awards ceremony held on 23 June 2021. Jury members from the most influential brands in the wine, spirits, and premium soft drinks industry – such as The Coca Cola Company and XO Consulting – discussed the key design and innovation trends that this year’s entries highlighted.

Sparkling Wine and Champagne

Perrier-Jouët Ecobox - Champagne Perrier-Jouet

Maison Perrier-Jouët aimed to reinvent the art of gifting with this singular giftbox. Created in fully natural fibres to embody the DNA of the iconic Champagne house while respecting nature, the box’s innovative and deep debossed surface creates a texture that the jury described as “very beautiful” and a “pure and elegant design”.

Still wine

Open the Senses - Grupo Lappi Etiquetas

This pack appeals to the various senses that the wine transmits to its consumer: taste, smell and sensations, which are also extended to the rest of the senses. The jury members find that the combination of the technology and label was very interesting.

Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey Bordeaux dry white wine vintage 2019

The concept of the Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey was to find a way to encourage the buyer to consume the first bottle of the wooden case. The idea was to touch the emotional part of the buyer with something directly related to the bottle by being creative.

Spirits & Liqueurs: Mass Market

SHAPEART - Amcor Capsules

Shapeart by Amcor Capsules is a service that allows wine and spirits brands to design its own custom aluminium caps! An original and sustainable initiative, according to the jury.

Spirits & Liqueurs: Premium and Luxury

GinPeace - ATIU

Atiu's Gin Peace bottle stands for "freedom of design". The glass is subtly decorated all over the bottle, even in the most inaccessible areas, a real technical feature according to the jury. In addition, the bottle is 100% recyclable. "An innovative and sustainable product" the jury said.

Quinta da Pedra Alta Pedra No. 3 - Denomination

Quinta da Pedra Alta wanted to reinvigorate the entire brand with a new identity, new packaging and a much higher quality of wine. With a frosted effect bottle, a clean design, a touch of transparency and the use of a glass stopper, this is a "very beautiful product that plays on sight and touch" say the jury.

Beer and Cider

The goal of MT rings was to eliminate the current plastic rings that almost all beverage companies use to pack its cans. They used pulp paper - material made from bamboo and sugar cane - all organic, biodegradable materials. The PLD jury saw this as very unique, innovative, and something that will surprise the buyer.

Presentation Pack

Coffret "The Botanist" - VIROJANGLOR

A resuable box with amazing sustainable advantages! The second life of the product is at the heart of the project and is a real incentive for the consumer to use the box as a planter. The jury thought that the pack is a very original idea and takes the consumer to the end of the natural lifecycle.

Martell Chanteloup XXO - Martell Mumm Perrier-Jouet

A bespoke and personalised ultra-prestigious pack, this pack is developed to create a highly personalised customer experience. The innovation requirements included the idea of opening a 'secret chest' with many different compartments. The jury described this pack as an exceptional work of art.

Trust Me Vodka Display Box - Retail Pak

This interactive, sustainable and luxurious pack keeps the bottle as the main focus yet invites curiosity and helps underline the message that this is no ordinary vodka. The jury enjoyed the incredible opening and consumer experience and loved seeing something completely new!

Sustainable Innovation

Maison Ruinart - étui seconde peau - PUSTERLA 1880

Maison Ruinart’s brief was to solve four challenges: to find a technology that allows the case to fit the shape of the bottle, to make the case impermeable to light, to ensure the case protects the wine until it is tasted, and to have a totally eco-designed packaging. A new technique was developed to enrich the cellulose pulp with a natural metal oxide that reinforces the opacity of the second skin. The jury thought this innovation was "unquestionably a great success".
