The PLD Innovation Awards finalists

The PLD Innovation Awards finalists were presented at the PLD Digital Day held on 25 March 2021. Jury members from the most influential brands in the wine, spirits, and premium soft drinks industry – such as The Coca Cola Company and XO Consulting – discussed the key design and innovation trends that this year’s entries highlighted. Winners will be announced in June 2021 – more details to follow!

Sparkling Wine and Champagne

Perrier-Jouët Ecobox - Champagne Perrier-Jouet

Maison Perrier-Jouët aimed to reinvent the art of gifting with this singular giftbox. Created in fully natural fibres to embody the DNA of the iconic Champagne house while respecting nature, the box’s innovative and deep debossed surface creates a texture that the jury described as “very beautiful” and a “pure and elegant design”.

L'Ambitieuse - BLIV Champagne

These striking hand-decorated bottles are designed to create a 360-degree experience for the consumer, through the elegant ‘Cuvée Black’ and a limited-edition version featuring glitter right around the bottle. The jury described the pack as “very original and premium” and praised the bottle for “breaking the established codes” in the champagne market.

Open the Senses - Grupo Lappi Etiquetas

This pack appeals to the various senses that the wine transmits to its consumer: taste, smell and sensations, which are also extended to the rest of the senses. The jury members find that the combination of the technology and label was very interesting.

Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey Bordeaux dry white wine vintage 2019

The concept of the Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey was to find a way to encourage the buyer to consume the first bottle of the wooden case. The idea was to touch the emotional part of the buyer with something directly related to the bottle by being creative.

29 quai des chartrons - HMS bordeaux

With four different labels, 29 Quai des Chartrons illustrates the different facets of the same wine, adapted to different international markets and consumers. Jury members liked the beautiful designs and the interesting marketing and branding approach.

Le bouchon dynamique ....Y'a in UP - LVMD

The LVMD start-up has developed a stopper with patents that aims to change the way consumers open bottles of wine and spirits. This innovation reconciles the two worlds of corks and capsules: it keeps the traditional cork and combines it with the simplicity of the capsule for the opening. The PLD jury considered this innovation as revolutionary!

Spirits & Liqueurs: Mass Market

SHAPEART - Amcor Capsules

Shapeart by Amcor Capsules is a service that allows wine and spirits brands to design its own custom aluminium caps! An original and sustainable initiative, according to the jury.

CARPANO RTD NEGRONI e MITO - Fratelli Branca Distillerie

Fratelli Branca Distillery focuses on the consumer experience with its bottled, ready-to-drink cocktail, Carpano RTD Negroni e Mito.

Spirits & Liqueurs: Premium and Luxury

GinPeace - ATIU

Atiu's Gin Peace bottle stands for "freedom of design". The glass is subtly decorated all over the bottle, even in the most inaccessible areas, a real technical feature according to the jury. In addition, the bottle is 100% recyclable. "An innovative and sustainable product" the jury said.

Quinta da Pedra Alta Pedra No. 3 - Denomination

Quinta da Pedra Alta wanted to reinvigorate the entire brand with a new identity, new packaging and a much higher quality of wine. With a frosted effect bottle, a clean design, a touch of transparency and the use of a glass stopper, this is a "very beautiful product that plays on sight and touch" say the jury.

Amaro Santoni 34 Erbe - P&P Promotion

With Amaro Santoni 34 Erbe, P&P Promotion wanted to create a unique and innovative bottle, aimed at a young and female audience. The jury praised "innovation in printing, exceptional design and superior quality". The brand wanted the consumer to want to keep the bottle as a decorative object after drinking it.

Belvedere Heritage 176 - Belvedere Vodka

With a gold-bronze colour palette, a distinctive bottle shape, and a vintage label, Heritage 176 was designed to differentiate itself from the rest of the Belvedere line and celebrate the spirit's unique flavour complexity. "A very fine accomplishment" revealed the jury.

Il Pì Gram - P&P Promotion

With its Il Pì Gram bottle, P&P Promotion innovates thanks to the patented CMCV technology, which plays on the colours of the glass bottle depending on its filling. A very beautiful, innovative and technical achievement, says the jury which also surprises the consumer.

Beer and Cider

MT RINGS - CALYPSO SPACE SL

The goal of MT rings was to eliminate the current plastic rings that almost all beverage companies use to pack its cans. They used pulp paper - material made from bamboo and sugar cane - all organic, biodegradable materials. The PLD jury saw this as very unique, innovative, and something that will surprise the buyer.

BotCub - Alzamora Group

This minimalist design reduces the environmental impact, enhances brand visibility and makes the product stand out. The use of noble materials and single-sided printing also reinforces its eco-design, a safe and stable pack that allows for easy transport with a single-handed grip. The jury find it interesting to replace the bundling film with cardboard.

Natakhtari Limited Edition - Crown Packaging

Based on 12th Century Georgian Medieval epic poem The Knight in the Panther’s Skin, Natakhtari pays tribute to one of the most magnificent examples of Georgian literature. Crown’s experts had to delve deep into its state of the art reproduction techniques to take maximum advantage of its high quality printing technology. Jury members liked the remarkable and elegant design.

Seedlip Spice 94 - Crown Packaging

The stunning design elevates the sophisticated flavour profile and aspirational nature of Seedlip. The can designs, using the botanicals in each flavour to form the head of an animal, are unique and iconic. The reflection properties of aluminium cans combined with transparent inks have been smartly used to enhance the luxury feel of the drink, making the cans truly stand out alongside others. The jury find it innovative for this type of product.

Presentation Pack

Coffret "The Botanist" - VIROJANGLOR

A resuable box with amazing sustainable advantages! The second life of the product is at the heart of the project and is a real incentive for the consumer to use the box as a planter. The jury thought that the pack is a very original idea and takes the consumer to the end of the natural lifecycle.

Trust Me Vodka Display Box - Retail Pak

This interactive, sustainable and luxurious pack keeps the bottle as the main focus yet invites curiosity and helps underline the message that this is no ordinary vodka. The jury enjoyed the incredible opening and consumer experience and loved seeing something completely new!

Martell Chanteloup XXO - Martell Mumm Perrier-Jouet

A bespoke and personalised ultra-prestigious pack, this pack is developed to create a highly personalised customer experience. The innovation requirements included the idea of opening a 'secret chest' with many different compartments. The jury described this pack as an exceptional work of art.

Belvedere Cutting Board - Belvedere Vodka

The Belvedere Cutting Board presents an eco-friendly pack with a cardboard base made from recyclable and FSC certified materials. The challenge was to create a rigid base that could support the weight of the bottles. The jury commented that this pack was minimalistic and created a great consumer experience.

COFFRET Moët & Chandon – SPECIALLY YOURS - VIROJANGLOR

The emblematic Moët & Chandon diamond-shaped motif decorates the long sides of the box, the corners are sharp and the lid slides like the pencil boxes of yesterday. The jury described the pack as a "new consumer experience of personalization" also adding that "the opening and closing is of really high quality".

Sustainable Innovation

Maison Ruinart - étui seconde peau - PUSTERLA 1880

Maison Ruinart’s brief was to solve four challenges: to find a technology that allows the case to fit the shape of the bottle, to make the case impermeable to light, to ensure the case protects the wine until it is tasted, and to have a totally eco-designed packaging. A new technique was developed to enrich the cellulose pulp with a natural metal oxide that reinforces the opacity of the second skin. The jury thought this innovation was "unquestionably a great success".

Belvedere Cutting Board - Belvedere Vodka

The Belvedere Cutting Board presents an eco-friendly pack with a cardboard base made from recyclable and FSC certified materials. BALLANTINE'S - Bamboo Glorifier - DAPY PARIS

The Bamboo Glorifier is a sustainable glorifier without using plastic or metal, and all electronic components are easily removable for recycling. The production challenge was to use the bamboo material and make sure it could have very similar specifications to what it would have usually produced in plastics. The judges branded this product as an ‘"interesting innovative solution replacing plastic with bamboo".
