The PCD Innovation Awards winners

The PCD Innovation Awards finalists were presented at the PCD Innovation Awards ceremony held on 22 March 2021. Jury members from the most influential brands in the perfume and cosmetics industry – such as Chanel, L’Occitane en Provence, Dior, Huda Beauty, Interparfums and more – discussed the new developments shining a light on the future of packaging innovations in the sector.

Make-up: Premium

Luxury Hydrating Lipstick - Juni Cosmetics

With an aluminium-only packaging, Juni Cosmetics took up the challenge of producing a 100% plastic-free, recyclable lipstick. This family-owned brand has succeeded in making a name for itself by demonstrating that change is possible at every level! The jury congratulated this unique eco-responsible pack.


Mascara Stretch - Chanel

Chanel once again pushes the limits of cosmetic research and innovation with a new mascara involving 3D technology. It's a unique swirl-shaped brush whose spikes catch, curl and lengthen the lashes and provide length and volume for all types of lashes. "A revolutionary innovation with premium rendering" say the jury.


"Les Beiges"; Fond de Teint Fluide - Chanel

Chanel has set itself the goal of keeping the same luxurious pack while offering an eco-friendlier version. With its new 100% rPET cap and transparent glass, it's a successful step as the brand has reduced its global impact by 9% according to SPICE. The jury congratulates Chanel for its environmental approach.


Jimmy Choo Seduction Collection Lipstick - Interparfums

Jimmy Choo took on the challenge of creating a lipstick in the shape of a shoe heel, to tie in with the original Jimmy Choo brand identity and products. The jury acknowledged the beautiful execution and luxury design.


Fragrances: Men/Unisex

Sauvage Ressource - Parfums Christian Dior

With its refillable glass bottle, Dior is taking a leap towards eco-responsibility. The Sauvage Ressource perfume now has 100mL or 300mL aluminium refills. Once fixed on its support, the perfume refills itself and stops automatically once the refill is finished. The jury appreciated the excellent refill initiative whilst also presenting a luxury bottle.


Fragrances: Women/Unisex

Boucheron Serpent Boheme - Interparfums

Developing a new perfume with reference to the iconic Boucheron jewellery collection, "Serpent Bohème” had the objective to reproduce snake scales to replicate its jewellery pieces. The jury applaud its superb execution that uses classic techniques to perfect an innovative bottle.


Armani My way - L'Oréal

L'Oréal, who is committed to sustainability, highlighted the refillability of this perfume and the technicality of concealing the seal of the cap. The jury underlined the good efforts in terms of eco-design, the good environmental impact, and the potential for consumer loyalty.


Jimmy Choo Seduction Collection Parfums - Interparfums

For the first launch of the collection, the main constraint was to achieve the "hammered" effect on the cap that can be found in its jewellery. The judges highlighted a beautiful design and rendering of the tappering technique.


Montblanc Signature - Interparfums

The idea of translating an image of a house onto an object other than a piece of jewellery is paramount. In this case, Maison Montblanc wanted to pay tribute to the iconic inkwell, which is part of the Montblanc heritage, through the opalescence of the bottle. The jury appreciated the elegance of the pack and the technical execution, which made best use of the glassmaker's experience of striking details that perfectly reinforce the design and the perceived quality.


Loubiworld - PUIG

Loubiworld is a collection of seven faceted glass bottles - each representing a country that inspires Louboutin's show designs - featuring the brand's iconic red. Each flacon is crowned with a weighty zamak cap featuring an extravagant design which is made for particularly complex unmoulding processes.


Givenchy L'Interdit, Eau de parfum solide - Albéa

How can we modify a pack but still serve the same purpose? This was the gamble of Givenchy l'Interdit - eau de parfum solide, who have launched this solid perfume for a quick and practical application, to use several times a day. The jury praised the "different way to use perfume that is more environmentally friendly".


Marc Jacobs PERFECT EDP - Coty

The originality of this pack is mostly shown by the cap. The cap is made from 13 parts and charms and are attached either mechanically or by gluing. The jury were impressed that the attachments of each part is completely hidden and appreciate the individuality of the pack.


Skincare: Mass market

NIVEA Naturally Good Body Lotion - Beiersdorf

Nivea's naturally good body lotion is a 'rollable' pack made of 50% less plastic compared to its other products, and all the materials used are 100% recyclable. The jury described the pack and the roll-up mechanism as "simple yet intuitive" with great practical functionality for the consumer whilst also thinking about the environmental aspect.


Shea Butter Hand Cream Limited Edition Mathilde Cabanas - L'Occitane en provence

L'Occitane en provence worked closely with TUBEX to create a tube made out of 95% PCR and 5% of PIR Aluminium. The jury were very impressed with its huge sustainability achievements and it being the first time a 95% PCR Aluminium tube is on the market.


Anthélios Lait Hydratant Eco-Responsable SPF50+ - L'Oréal

This tube contains minimal plastic material and has reduced its weight by replacing it with cardboard, whilst also maintaining the rigidity and barrier properties. The jury described this pack as a "real technical innovation that uses the advantages of paper".


Skincare: Premium

REN Clean Skincare Evercalm™ Global Protection Day Cream

This product has become the first luxury skincare brand to supply feedstock recycling material on the market. Using this technology to source certified recycled polymer delivers the pack without any compromise on functionality. The jury were extremely impressed with this "ground-breaking innovation".


Creme 50g CAP - Le Lift & Hydra Beauty - Chanel

Chanel have replaced its previous black opaque glass jar with a more eco-friendly version. It displays a grey translucent glass jar and a new cap in R-PET resin, which is made of post consumer PET plastic bottle waste. The jury praised the "technical challenge of working with recycled material whilst keeping the luxury aesthetic".


Lancôme Clarifique Double Essence - L'Oréal

This pack presents a new accessory in a dual essence with a very innovative shape and a very innovative process. The presence of a whisk ensures better emulsion and faster optimization of the formula. The jury were very impressed with the emulsifier patent, its efiiciency, and simple yet beautiful design.


Prodigy Cure Cell Glow - L'Oréal

Prodigy Cure Cell Glow in a glass bottle, has the first syringe on a luxury cosmetic product with ultra precise dosage. The jury were very impressed by the "luxury execution and complex syringe".


Personal Care: Mass market & premium

Henkel's Social Plastic Ecosystem

Henkel has teamed up with Plastic Bank, a company that works with poor waste disposal infrastructure and high levels of plastic pollution, to make its 100% recycled plastic bottles. The jury congratulate this environmental concept, which will reform the skincare market.


Shampoing solide GARNIER ULTRA DOUX - L'Oréal

L'Oréal has released its range of solid shampoos, with its DOP and Garnier Ultra Doux brands. The packaging is 100% cardboard, without plastic, and optimized so that there is no excess material. A beautiful ecological innovation underlined by the jury.


Limited Edition pack

Coffret Exceptionnel Beige 50ml - Chanel

Described as a "mind-blowing, magnificent real work of art" by the jury, Chanel's unique box with decoration handmade by Les Maisons Lemarié et Baccarat maintains its artisanal know-how in exceptional products.

V&R Flower Bomb Limited Edition - L'Oréal

The V&R Flower Bomb displays 3D printing and decoration by galvanizing. Its unique creation combining 3D printing and the traditional know-how of decorating, created an "exceptional, very beautiful and out of the ordinary" pack.

Flacon Collection Cristal, Edition Limitée 2021, Pivoine - Lalique Parfums

The flacon is presented in an ivory coffret debossed on the top with a motif of peonies in full bloom that both glorifies and protects the annual edition made of crystal with a different motif every year. The jury highlighted the "magnificent execution and expertise in every detail. The luxurious box really reveals the treasure and highlights the crystal bottle perfectly"
