The ADF Innovation Awards winners

The ADF Innovation Awards winners were revealed at the ADF Innovation Awards ceremony held on 22 June 2021. Jury members from the most influential brands in the aerosol industry – such as Unilever, Johnson & Johnson, Beiersdorf, KAO and the CFA (French Aerosol Committee) – discussed the new aerosol and dispensing packaging  and technical innovations in the sector.

Biore u The Body - KAO Corporation

This pack reduces plastic use by approximately 50% compared with plastic bottles with a pump dispenser. This packaging technology offers excellent user-friendliness based on universal design and can help increase the use of film packaging that uses a minimal amount of plastic.

Shoe deo actuator Carl - Weener Plastics

A sustainable foot deodorant that sanitizes and freshens up shoes. This single piece actuator is a dual spray, which means that its a simultaneous double spray in the opposite direction. The pack is also user-friendly and uses a mono-material solution.

Shampoing sec compressé Garnier Fructis - L'Oréal

This range has three big advantages; the compressed format, the transparency - so the consumer can see the formula and check how much is left, and the design - the sleeve allows for a more sophisticated decoration.

Monsavon Bio Au Lait d'Amande - Farmol s.p.a.

Monsavon Bio Au Lait d'Amande is a biological eco spray deodorant with 99.9% of its ingredients of natural origin. The packaging is an ecospray can and the can and cap are recyclable. Finally, all the packaging is Cosmos Organic compliant.

Industrial & Technical Innovation

NIVEA Shower Refill Station - Beiersdorf AG

The prototype of this station was developed in just seven months by a cross-functional team within Beiersdorf’s Global Packaging and R&D functions. The main intention was to create a distinctive and easy user experience. The fast execution of this project was possible by adopting agile working and manufacturing processes. The consumer will not only experience the idea of reusability when participating in the pilot project but will also be part of a recycling loop, as the team will recycle the returned bottles again after the test phase. The aim is to learn about consumer acceptance towards reusability and gain knowledge about the supply chain handling.

Concept of the year

TOPcolours - TUBEX

The ink complements Tubex's aim to offer its customers sustainable solutions in can manufacturing. The ink helps to preserve the rainforest, and the binding agents are 100% pure natural resin and renewable. The jury complimented this pack with having a "good direction" and that the organic ink is very interesting.

ADF AWARD WINNER

Patented Alloy with 60% Real PCR inclusion - TUBEX

This new and patented alloy uses real PCR in addition to using aluminium intended for downcycling. The idea of this concept is that customers can decide the percentage of PCR material used depending on their strategy and requirements. This pack was described by the jury as "very smart and technically challenging".

Aerosol cans made from 100% PCR-aluminium - Nussbaum

This pack is the first of its kind containing no primary aluminium at all. Its ambition was clear - to manufacturer a can made from PCR-recycled aluminium only and implement a regional circular economy material flow. The jury stated that this pack is a huge leap towards sustainability.

Sustainable Innovation

Unilever Recycled, Refreshed - TUBEX

Unilever Recycled, Refreshed is manufactured using the most sustainable aluminium aerosol can currently possible. Its weight loss of 14% was achieved by reducing the wall thickness and slightly modifying the shape of the shoulder compared to the previous shape. A very sustainable can, the jury commented on its "impressive technical achievement".

Love Beauty and Planet Dry Shampoo - Unilever

A planet conscious pack that is >90% naturally derived using a non-VOC and non- GHG propellant, it continues to deliver consumer benefits compared to other market offerings. It also maintains all brand directives including being vegan, no animal testing, recyclability and recycled content within packaging.

Lesso - Aerosol Service Poland

Lesso is a dose applicator designed especially for compressed & BOV aerosols. Its main purpose is to teach the consumer how to use the product consciously and economically. Its minimalist and ease to use design ensures that it can be used in a variety of ways. The pack also has a great impact on the environment. The jury saw this innovation as a great success.

Special recognition award

General purpose cleaner - Alcohol 70% Aerosol (ALU 150mL and TP 300mL)

The aim of this product was humanitarian action to assist Brazilian public hospitals through State Civil Defence by introducing the Alcohol Aerosol in a Public Hospital Service throughout the pandemic. Essentially, it is a low-cost, general cleaner for the low-income population, during Covid-19. The Jury found that it was a very good initiative and supported the message that the aerosol industry is strategic and needs an essential service status. It also sent out the message to the public that “the metallic packaging is infinitely recyclable”.
