Interview I Fabien Lemonnier talks to us about the PCD Innovation Awards and beauty packaging trends

We spoke to Fabien Lemonnier, Sustainable Packaging at Parfums Christian Dior who is also part of the PCD Innovation Awards jury. Fabien tells us about what he is looking for in the PCD Innovation Awards entries and his vision about the future beauty packaging trends.

As a new member of the PCD jury, we thank you for accepting our invitation. Can you tell us what motivated your decision?

In our Cosmetics & Fragrances packaging business, innovation is essential. It stimulates an entire profession and PCD has always been the show that promotes this innovation, both through its conferences and through the awards it presents each year.

Participating in the PCD jury is an opportunity for me to actively encourage innovative initiatives and I therefore did not hesitate to accept your invitation.

In your own group, how will you go about selecting the products that will compete?

We are going to identify packaging for which a technological innovation has made it possible to respond to a challenge: reduction of the environmental footprint, new gestures, new possibilities in terms of aesthetic rendering are some of the possibilities.

As a member of the jury, what will you look for in the other applications?

I will be looking for the unexpected. Any initiative that has made it possible to launch a product that provides a new response, and a new possibility in our profession. Of course, given the environmental issues at stake, I will take into account the eco-responsible nature of the entries in my assessment.

What makes a “good” application?

A good application will display a packaging that achieves excellence in several areas: design, aesthetics, technical achievement, and eco-design.

What does innovation mean to you?

For me, innovation is the future of major brands. It contributes to product differentiation and excellence. It is the main stimulus of our business.

What do you think is THE trend for the coming year in terms of packaging innovation?

As has been the case for the past two years, for me THE trend that will be confirmed for 2022 is the consideration of environmental constraints in packaging. Whether it’s in the design, the technical conception or the choice of materials. We are going to see more and more streamlined, reusable packaging on the market, made from renewable materials.
