Carine Christophe, Environmental Manager at Pernod Ricard, discusses the drink giant’s sustainability targets, the biggest challenges for the sector and her path into the packaging business.
What do you see as the key challenge for packaging developers/designers in 2020?
Ensuring their packaging is truly sustainable – more and more consumers are becoming increasingly demanding. The move away from plastics with consumer pressure, regulatory requirements and global partnerships such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundations’ New Plastic Economy.
What, for you, is the most exciting innovation of the past year in packaging?

What or who inspires you in your working life?
Innovation in all the materials and in all the consumption/shopping trends.
What will you talk about at ADF&PCD and PLD Paris 2020 and why is it an important issue?
Sustainable Packaging – important for the life and vitality of our planet. At Pernod Ricard we have a sustainable packaging taskforce and recently launched commitments to drive sustainable packaging further, including a target of 100% recyclable/compostable/reusable/bio-sourced packaging; 100% certified cardboard in our packaging; 100% of new projects following eco-design principles; 50% recycled glass by 2025; the elimination of all single-use plastic promotional material so by 2030, all promotional material will be either recyclable, compostable, reusable or bio-sourced; and a target of 25% recycled PET in our packaging by 2025.
Some examples of recent changes to our packaging include light weighting, with a reduction of 22% for the Altos Tequila bottle; increasing recycled content, for instance to over 40% post consumer recycled content for Absolut vodka; and removing gift boxes for on trade for Martell Cognac.
How did you get into packaging?
I have worked in the environmental sustainability field for many years and packaging is an area that is relevant in this topic. Since joining Pernod Ricard I have participated in many working groups on packaging which represents 30% of our carbon footprint and is a key topic addressed through the circular making pillar of our CSR strategy.
Describe the perfect pack in three words
